A one day practical course on navigation by map and compass, for those seeking to be more independent in the UK’s hills and mountains. Set in the glorious surroundings of the Shropshire Hills, this course is ideal for anyone with little or no prior navigational experience. If you are a more experienced navigator, we will be able to build on your skills throughout the day. A small group size ensures adequate learning potential and plenty of time to enjoy the stunning scenery!

The course covers:
- Introduction to different scale maps and their relevance to walkers
- Setting the map
- Identifying and interpreting key map symbols and features, inc. contours
- Planning and following a route – formulating a ‘navigation strategy’
- Following a route away from paths
- Features and use of a compass
- Estimating distance using pacing and timing techniques
- How to navigate in poor visibility.
Our route takes us around the hills east of Church Stretton, culminating on Shropshire’s iconic mini-mountain, Caer Caradoc. Expect to cover between 5 and 6 miles (8-10km) over occasionally steep terrain on a mixture of paths and grass. A reasonable level of hill fitness is required. Course duration approx. 6 hours.
Compass and map sheet provided for the day. You are of course welcome to use your own map (OS Explorer 217) and compass if you prefer.
