Walk Cadair Idris

Craig Cau above Llyn Cau

Cadair Idris (the chair of Idris) is a mountain steeped in myth and legend. Once home to the eponymous giant who is said to have created a seat on the mountain from which to view the heavens, nowadays the mountain is a National Nature Reserve due to its rich geology and wildlife. Our route takes us up from the south side, on the gloriously scenic Minffordd path. Starting steeply up beside cascading waterfalls through ancient ‘Celtic rainforest’ woodland, we’ll emerge into the arms of an impressive cirque, where glacial lake Llyn Cau lies surrounded by towering cliffs. Gaining the top of these cliffs, we’ll walk around the rim and up to the main summit, Penygadair, then head off across the broad summit plateau to the neighbouring top of Mynyndd Moel, before beginning our descent.

Rearward views to Craig Cau

A route of approx. 6miles/10km with 3300ft/1000m of ascent through rugged terrain, over uneven paths and rocky mountain tops. Good level of fitness required. Walk duration approx. 5-7 hours.
